The Best Of October 2011

This post outlines the best articles that have been posted on TeacherAde, and it also includes other interesting articles that I have found on other blogs and other sites. Enjoy.

This is the second month that TeacherAde has been alive and it seems to be doing pretty well. I have certainly enjoyed my experience with writing, networking, and learning.

I am not a guru of knowledge but know a little about education and am learning more all the time. I am pleased to be able to share with everyone what I know and have learned here at TeacherAde.

Now to the best posts of October.

Top 5 most viewed articles from TeacherAde

  • The most viewed post on my entire website is Socrative. Socrative is an online service that allows you to create an interactive lesson with your students and provides instant feedback. It is an excellent resource for teachers and I hope you use it in your future lessons. Oh yeah, it's free!
  • Teachers have a lot on their plate. It is hard to be able to accomplish everything. Sometimes we can get to involved with our lesson that we forget about the real importance of education. Sometimes teachers can put more emphasis on Teaching the Lesson vs. Teaching the Class. It is important to remember that our students are ultimately more important than our lessons.
  • In our digital age, students need to develop the skill of typing. It is important to start teaching them how to develop that skill earlier in life. Dance Mat Typing will allow them to do just that.
  • Your goal needs to be for your students to develop critical thinking skills. However, the school schedule is so packed that there really isn't time to work on higher order thinking, THERE IS TOO MUCH CONTENT THAT STILL HAS TO BE COVERED. So we just teach to the test, but here is a little help on reaching Higher Order Thinking: In One Day.
  • A growing issue in education is the high teacher burnout numbers. The post on Teacher Burnout: Why We Quit is a great article that discusses the three reasons teachers leave the profession.

Editors Pick- The following are my picks of the top articles that did not receive prominent page-views but deserve a second look.

Best of the Rest

The Principals Page is an excellent blog that is written by a witty and always entertaining Micheal Smith. A post on Unrealistically High Self Esteem  really got me thinking and I am Sure you will enjoy it.

Get Rich Slowly is a personal finance blog that offers practical tips for getting out of debt, and building wealth. Staff writer Tim Sullivan had an excellent post on Callibrating and Circumventing the Cost of College

A another good post at the edweek website blog Digital Education was a post on Cyberbullying: The Power and Peril of Anonymity. It deals with the ongoing struggle to manage online attacks.
