What is... Title 1?

What is... Title 1 is a part of the series on explaining common terms in education that can get confusing if you are not clear on what they are. There are so many abbreviations and terms in education that are distinct to education it often sounds like a different language. A vocabulary lesson of sorts.

Title 1 is a branch of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, to ensure that all kids in America have an equal opportunity to succeed. The law was designed to supplement districts with additional funding to serve low-performing or at-risk students.

Each year Title 1 schools receive $7 billion nationally. The purpose for this expenditure is to close the achievement gap between the rich and poor by providing quality facilities, up-to-date staff, and educational services to selected schools.

Title 1 School: a title 1 school is a school in a district that is populated by high percentages of poverty.

What Title 1 funding is used for?
  • Title 1 Lead Teachers
  • Title 1 Instructional Teachers
  • Professional Learning for Teachers
  • Parent Involvement
  • Parent Resource Centers

Are you familiar with Title 1 programs? Is there more to Title 1 that is worth noting?
